Decoding the Horizon

Artspace Warehouse presents Decoding the Horizon, an exhibition celebrating artworks by internationally exhibited and collected artists Mark Acetelli, Cynthia Coulombe-Begin, Mike Gough, Zabel, and Ross Tamlin.
The essence of a painting remains encoded in the boundary of the canvas until we look beyond the horizon for associations graining over the subject in its interior meaning. This entanglement of thoughts is compatible with the identification of classical interpretations forever altered when understanding the underlying theories the artist expresses.
Mark Acetelli's paintings awaken your sense of exploration and adventure and demand a new discovery. A chemistry of complexity and spontaneity, lyrical abstraction of frenzied marks, many of which previously lay hidden, buried beneath strong layers of self-taught -expression. Those truths first obscured and then obvious, aim to engage the viewer, allowing them to explore their own interpretation. In his work, Mark seeks to evoke a feeling rather than depict a defined image. He uses primarily oils and encaustics to create thickly layered canvases with emotive bursts of color. His works show a world where imagination and reality come together.
Cynthia Coulombe-Bégin’s artworks portray specific parts of the human body, especially large close-up portrayals of the mouth and eyes, which are depicted with great contrasts of color and chiaroscuro. These symbols are constructed with specific gestures and drippings in which Coulombe-Bégin portrays an abstract universe full of movement, symbolism, and eroticism.
Mike Gough’s interest in the elusive quality of memory has always been an invariable interest in his art practice. Rooted in memories of his upbringing in Newfoundland, Gough’s paintings are autobiographical but carry universal narratives. In the absence of detail, there is an opportunity for one’s own memories to develop. An expansive solitude and sense of isolation is met with a universal feeling of what it means to belong. At its core, his practice explores how our relationship with the natural world connects and defines us.
Guided by her passion for life and her spirit, French-Canadian painter Zabel creates vibrant artworks filled with romance and immersive textures. With a belief that art is all about feeling, she infuses her art with strong emotive qualities. Zabel paints each scene with precision, using only spatulas for application. From chic and glamorous lifestyles rendered in gold and silver to neon pinks and greens, you can feel the vibrancy of her life’s travels and colorful experiences.
Ross Tamlin's signature corrugated iron paintings combine traditional art genres including still-life and landscape along with graphic art. Influenced by the De Stijl movement, these paintings represent a synthesis of art and function. Incorporating the aesthetics of modern industrial technique, the corrugation in his photorealistic compositions is a visual illusion created by layers of paint and varnish.
