Artist Spotlight: Clara Berta – A Journey of Healing and Expression
Art has the power to heal, transform, and inspire. For Clara Berta, creativity is not just a career—it is a deeply personal journey shaped by loss, resilience, and an unwavering connection to nature. With a career spanning over two decades, her work continues to evolve, embracing minimalism, intuition, and an ever-expanding exploration of artistic techniques. In this spotlight, we delve into her inspirations, creative process, and the emotional depth behind her art.
An Artistic Journey Rooted in Healing
Berta’s career began in 2000 with her first show—an experience that, at the time, felt like stepping into the unknown. Recognizing the need to develop her craft, she pursued printmaking classes and private lessons. However, it was a personal tragedy in 2003, the loss of her late husband, that reshaped her relationship with art.
“Grief was overwhelming, but slowly, I realized that creating art was helping me heal,” she recalls. The turning point came a few months later, when she exhibited her work alongside another artist and sold two monoprints. That moment of validation fueled a lifelong pursuit of artistic expression. “Having a foundation in printmaking has helped me tremendously in my creative process and what I do today.”
Minimalism, Serenity, and the Healing Power of Art
“I think my theme is minimalism,” Berta shares. “Last year on March 1st, I moved to Laguna Beach. It was something that I had to do. It was another chance for me to heal since my fiancé passed away. I had a desire to be in a creative community.”
Themes of minimalism and serenity are central to Berta’s work, influenced by her surroundings and the tranquility she finds in nature. A major life change—relocating to Laguna Beach in 2024—offered her the peaceful atmosphere she needed to heal and reconnect with her creativity.
"Moving to Laguna Beach was something I had to do", she explains. “It gave me the opportunity to be in a creative community, to be surrounded by beauty, and to continue healing.” This ongoing process of self-discovery and growth is deeply woven into her art, as she moves away from caregiving and toward a greater focus on her personal and artistic evolution.
A Creative Process Guided by Intuition
Rituals play a vital role in Berta’s creative practice. “I have a daily morning practice where I meditate, and that helps me start my day”. This is a moment of stillness that sets the tone for the work ahead. “Sometimes, I meditate before I start painting. It allows me to listen to my inner voice and intuition, which are essential in my creative process.”
Embracing silence allows Berta to connect deeply with her work. “I paint in silence. It’s important for me to be able to hear my thoughts and truly connect with my work.” Over time, she has learned to trust her instincts. “I have to learn when to stop, sometimes I have overworked a painting and then I step back and I realize, slow down. Breathe. Let the painting breathe as well.”
One of the most exciting developments in her artistic process has been the discovery of a unique pouring technique. “It happened by accident,” she recalls. “I had a bucket of dirty paint and didn’t want to throw it away. I decided to recycle it, and something magical happened.” Since then, pouring has become a fundamental part of her practice, a way to embrace spontaneity while continuing to explore new techniques.
Evolving Style and Artistic Influences
Berta’s work has been influenced by renowned figures such as Gerhard Richter, whose meditative approach to art has served as an inspiration. “I just love his meditative process of creating art. There’s a documentary about his life that I highly recommend,” she notes. Over time, her own style has evolved—expanding beyond her early foundations to incorporate intuitive techniques, large-scale works, and a deeper exploration of emotion through abstraction.
Moments of Recognition and Achievements
Throughout her career, Berta has experienced moments of recognition that serve as milestones along her creative path. “I was very proud to show my work at Chiba City Museum of Art during the Olympics a few years ago,” Berta says. “I also received an honor there. It’s always nice to be recognized.”
More recently, her art reached an entirely new audience when it appeared in a Super Bowl commercial. “It was such a lovely surprise to see my work on the big screen,” she shares. Each of these moments serves as a reminder of the impact her art can have beyond the studio.
Art as a Force for Connection and Healing
For Berta, art is more than just a form of expression—it is a way to create dialogue, foster emotional connections, and bring joy into the world. Looking ahead, she aspires to create large-scale works for hotels and museums, expanding the reach of her vision.
“I want my work to make a difference. To create an impact,” she affirms. “What matters most to me is the emotional connection—knowing that my art has moved someone, that it has sparked a conversation or evoked a feeling.”
Through every brushstroke, every layer of paint, and every moment of reflection, Clara Berta’s work continues to embody the transformative power of creativity. It is an invitation—to heal, to explore, and to embrace the beauty of the unknown.
